Joe Suriano graduated with the Sidney Central School Class of 1982. Joe earned his bachelor of science degree from Ithaca College and his master's in organic chemistry from Bucknell University. He earned his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1993.
Joe has had an outstanding career in the field of organic chemistry. His interest and aptitude in this field began under the tutelage of Sidney chemistry teacher Dave Pysnik, including participation in Dave's summer program at Ithaca College.
Joe's career progressed from working in research and development at Union Carbide to project leader, senior scientist, lab manager and, ultimately, an executive position in advanced materials innovation at the GE Global Research Center.
He holds the position of senior global technology director for Ascend Performance Materials, an engineering plastics global innovation leader. In this role, Joe is responsible for ensuring the correct chemistry to meet international quality and safety standards.
Joe's awards and distinctions are numerous, including GE global research awards, testifying before Congress, attaining 20 U.S. patents, with more filed, and 27 publications and presentations.
Joe's community service is extensive and remarkable. He has served as a school board member, soccer club head coach and program coordinator of outreach programs for disabled children. He's also hosted a science and technology high school program for 10 years and has been a fourth-grade Science Day participant for 20 years. He volunteered for six years with The Unity House’s "Adopt a Child" program for children of domestic violence, volunteered at the food bank and spent 900 hours at the Ascent Westgate School for disabled children, helping to rebuild a nature trail after a hurricane.
