William F. Schmidt III, MD, PhD 1961

Honored as an Eagle Scout (BSA) and famous for taking part in the Susquehanna River 'dunking' of Coach Fran Redmond in celebration of the 1960 undefeated Sidney High football team, William Schmidt went to Hobart College and joined the US Navy, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as Hospital Corpsman before returning to the United States to earn Doctoral Degrees in Physiology and Pharmacology and a Medical Degree, all from Duke University. He holds certifications in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, is licensed to practice in several states and has led a life of service to children.

Dr. Schmidt is a pediatric hematologist and oncologist and serves as Medical Director and Administrator of the Children's Hospital of Greenville Hospital System in South Carolina.

He is also Chief of Pediatric Services, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Academic Chair of Pediatric Medical Education, and member of the Executive Committee, Greenville Hospital System.

His activity and outreach include positions as Professor of Pediatrics, University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and Professor of Bioengineering (Adjunct Faculty) at Clemson University.

He is the author of numerous professional papers and abstracts, a member of nearly a dozen professional societies and gives his time and support to local organizations such as the symphony, children's theatre, Ronald MacDonald House, and Rotary International.

His personal achievements and professional accomplishments are many and exemplary; however, his vision and passion for health care for the most vulnerable among us – our children – has earned the respect and love of everyone who knows him.

Dr. Schmidt resides in Greenville, South Carolina, with his wife, Jean. They have two children, Claire and Eric.
