"Tonight we dedicate "Sidney Alumni
Field" in honor of all those students who have passed
through the halls of Sidney Central School and to those
to come." Those words spoken on September 29, 2006 marked
the cuhnination of a dream of the SCSAA Board of
Directors and the alumni community.
In November of 2004, the SCS Board of
F,ducation approved the Association's request that the
athletic field that hosts football, boys and girls soccer
and boys and girls track and field be named Sidney Alumni
Field. With the creation of the SCSAA's Sports Hall of
Fame the year before, we had the means to fund the
illuminated sign for the field.
The Sports Hall of Fame honors past
athletes for their accomplishments while at Sidney and
the coaches for their team accomplishments and selfless
sacrifices over many years to student - athletes who wore
the maroon and white. It's induction ceremony, held
during Thanksgiving weekend, also serves as a fund
raiser, the goal of which is to provide the Athletic
Department at Sidney with much needed equipment which can
benefit all sports.
This year, the money raised was used for
the new sign which is mounted atop the score board. As
you will note in the picture, the old Warrior head logo
is on one side and the block S is on the other side of
the game clock, honoring the traditions of the past and
the positive outlook for future teams.
The dedication, hold during the half time
of the football game, was attended by Mayor Jim Warren
and other town dignitaries, members of the board of
education, superintendent, Sandra Cooper, SCSAA - board
members, many alumni, faculty, students, parents and
friends.
After remarks by SCSAA President Terry
Dermody, the countdown began, the sign was illuminated
and Greg Davie and the High School band led everyone ie
the singing of the Alma Mater. As Alumni stood to sing
they were reminded that the field was dedicated to them!
It was truly a special moment as the words to the old
song rose from the field on the hill out over the chilly
fall air. The football team went on to win the game with
Greene, adding to an already perfect night. After the
game, alumni gathered to spend some time together at the
newly reopened American Legion.
On Saturday, 60 golfers played in an
Alumni Golf Outing at the Sidney Golf and Country Club.
Because of the success of this tournament the Association
was able to fund the yearly scholarships given at
graduation. The cancellation of Alumni Weekend and the
annual Alumni Golf Tournament resulted in the necessary
funds not being raised in July.
During the weekend, alumni donated $1200
for flood relief in Sidney. A check for this amount was
presented to the Sidney United Way at the SCSAA October
Board meeting.
