This 20th Annual Sidney Central School Alumni Association Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony honors three powerhouse golf teams that sported an overall 60-4-1 record over the three years of competition. It has been close to 40 years since these teams competed and the golfers being recognized are the first golf teams to receive Legacy Award designation. The Sidney Golf and CC served the team well as its home course as opponents very often found it a tough course to navigate with quick greens and undulating fairways.
The 1983 team was led with senior play from Donny Greene, Mike DuMond, Chris Hayes, Todd Gould, Bobby Johnson, Todd Gould and Paul Davie. Talented underclassmen, however, may have stolen the show at times with consistent play from Mike Boyce, John Wagner, Tyler Sheils and David Krantz. The team plowed through the league and non-league schedule with a record of 21-2 and out-shined the competition at the Susquenango Association Championship with its first title since 1979.
With a number of players having graduated from the 1983 team, the 1984 team could still boast returning lettermen who would need to make the difference. And a difference manifested itself with stellar play from Tyler Sheils, David Krantz, John Wagner and senior Mike Boyce. Also, Bruce Yager, Larry Stage, Paul Ulm and Joe Cumm consistently played in the 4-5-6 positions and made a difference in the team total scores. The team rolled over the league opposition at the Sus Championship (2nd consecutive) by 17 shots. Tyler Sheils earned honors as the individual champion with a score of 78.
The 1985 team had 5 returning seniors (Sheils, Krantz, Wagner, Cumm, Yager) who would prevail in keeping Sidney’s winning ways intact. New players moved into starting positions with newcomer Bob Goerlich making the team. Kevin Sowersby and Paul Ulm made consistent contributions to keep the team strong beyond expectations. Young Danny Krantz moved into the lineup consistently. The team won the Susquenango Association Championship for the 3rd consecutive season. Tyler Sheils made it to the NYSPHSAA State Championship at Cornell University whereby he was a scoring member of the Section IV team.
It should be mentioned that Tyler Sheils, John Wagner and David Krantz lettered all 3 seasons. Congratulations to all three teams in earning the LEGACY TEAM AWARD for 2023.
