Mention the name Ashley Mahlmeister and the sport associated with her is track & field. However her resume in the team sports of soccer and volleyball was pretty good, too. Overall, she won 13 varsity letters, a terrific feat. Early on, Ashley participated in the annual K-5 Triathlon and sports like soccer, basketball and softball. The latter two gave way to volleyball and of course track by the time she was in middle school.
Let's start with soccer.......twice in her 4-year varsity tenure, Ashley played striker for a Sidney team that played in the sectional finals. She earned 2nd Team All-State honors as a senior.
Now to volleyball....twice Sidney teams won Section 4 championships to complete unbeaten regular seasons. In her junior year, Ash made 2nd team All-State status. In the 2008 final vs. B-G she led with 13 kills and in the 2009 title game against Delhi compiled 23 digs; Ashley is still considered one of Sidney's best overall volleyball players. And then there's track & field, winter and spring seasons, which produced 11 Section 4 individual titles. That total includes three 55m hurdles indoors, three 100m hurdles outdoors, four long jump and one triple jump events. Ashley's favorite meet came in her last NYS competition. There, she won the D-2 hurdles and long jump - in a sectional record 19' 6" - and was 2nd in the triple jump. Her indoor long jump of 18' 2.75" also established a new sectional mark.
Versatility served her well. Ashley earned the Mary Morrison Outstanding Athlete Award as she accepted a Division One Track & Field Scholarship to the University of Albany.
Versatility indeed. While competing for the Great Danes, Ashley transitioned from a hurdler/jumper to a point-scorer in the pentathlon (five events) and heptathlon (seven). Every meet she was in, Albany placed first in the America East Conference. Following her 2013 dual-major graduation, Ashley earned her Master's degree in Sports Science at England's Exeter University while playing volleyball for a championship school team.
Since then, having settled in Rochester, Ashley completed the accelerated Nursing Program at the University of Rochester in 2019 to earn a BS in Nursing. She is currently an RN at Strong Hospital in Rochester working at the Pediatric Surgical Suite. Ashley is forever grateful for her coaches (Doug Quinney, Steve Pelosi & Bill Munro) and her parents Joanne and Mark who attended nearly every
