1989-90 & 1990-91 Girls Cross Country

- 89-90 Girls X Country -

The Girls Varsity cross country (XC) team of 1989 may very well be the finest the Sidney community pieced together since the inception of the program back in the mid 1970s. After coming off a 2nd place finish at the Section IV XC Championship in 1988 the team got a boost from three freshmen: Maria Gara, Sara Ortiz and Kristen Finnegan. This group went on to earn the Susquenango (SUS) and Section IV Championship titles after winning EVERY INVITATIONAL they had entered during the course of the Fall campaign. The team was undefeated in its league schedule as well. They were ranked as high as #1 in the Class C NYS poll.

With the graduation of two seniors from the 1989 team, the 1990 team had to do some retooling. They received great contributions from returning lettermen and "newbies" who wanted to continue a fine tradition. The team won 6 of the 10 Invitational races that they entered and were again undefeated in league competition. They won the SUS Championship and then went on to win the Section 4, Class C XC Championship for the second consecutive year. This cohesive unit placed 6th at the NYSPHSAA Class C XC Championship in November of 1990. Sidney's roster had only one senior, team captain, Tanya Tralka.

The teams of 1989 and 1990 led the way to continued success in the Girls Cross Country Program. Starting the next season the Sidney Lady Warriors would go on to win the Section IV, Class C title in 3 of the next 4 years.
