The sibling rivalries in sports that existed at Sidney are always worth discussing, usually centering around the question "who was better?". Here, with the induction of Dave DuMond, you hear, "wow, they were both great", referring to Dave and his sister Pam DuMond Tarnowski, inducted in 2004.

Indeed. David earned ten varsity letters, starting with spring track as a freshman. His 2nd place discus finish at the Susquenango Association meet gave notice that an up and coming athlete would be around for three more years.

It's easy to recount Dave's track resume, with times, distances and places. Indoors, he was 4th in Section 4 as a soph then 1st as a senior - then 6th at States. Outdoors, he set school and league marks along the way in the shot put, and discus (both Sus and Sect. 4 titles as a senior) and in the 110 hurdles, despite limited hurdling experience. On a whim, HOF Coach Doug Quinney asked Dave to fill a space on the shuttle hurdle relay unit. Starting from scratch with a few hallway practices he found instant success. The shuttle team won its race, later at the 1988 State Qualifiers, Dave was "a lean away" from winning the Section IV individual event!"

Basketball was and is a lifelong love for Dave, who enjoyed a junior year more in the post season, as the Warriors boys (12 seed) upset Trumansburg (5 seed) to advance to the Class C quarterfinals. They then beat #13 seed Walton who had earlier upset #4 Oxford, setting up the sectional final vs Elmira Notre Dame, a game they lost but played tough. DuMond was a Sus league 2nd team selection that year. The highlight in a mediocre senior year was playing spoiler for Windsor by beating Greene and breaking the Sus West tie at the top.

Football's two seasons saw a 3-0 and 5-2 start dwindle to a 5-4 record in 1986, followed by a rare 3-3-2 slate as a senior in 1987. In his final campaign on the gridiron, Dave earned dual all-star Sus West honors - 1st team punter and 2nd team defensive end.

Academics were just as important. President of Honor Society, Redmond Scholar-Athlete and Ralph Pyle Male Athlete awards, and NYS Basketball Coaches Association All-Academic Team were some of the honors earned by graduation in 1988. At Ithaca, Dave continued for a brief time in track, highlighted by a freshman-year victory in both shot put and discus at the Colgate Invitational. A 5-year course in physical therapy took precedence, however and David had enjoyed a terrific career in that field. After about 10 years in outpatient work, he has switched to doing contract work in doctor's offices throughout North Carolina.

David gave a memorable introduction to Pam in 2004. Tonight, she returns the favor as now, the older brother joins her in the Sidney Alumni Sports Hall of Fame.
